Marvel is adding a new villain plot to the next Spider-Man movie in reshoots, says Tom Holland
Tom Holland revealed that one villain's plotline is getting "layered in" in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Who could it be?

The Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer is practically a who's who of Spider-Man villains. But instead of highlighting bigger names like Hobgoblin, Chameleon, or the Rhino, we get glimpses of lesser-known spider-baddies like Boomerang (not to be confused with DC's villain, Captain Boomerang) and Tarantula (also not to be confused with the DC villain of the same name).
Of course, Brand New Day also features the return of the Scorpion, played by Michael Mando, who we last saw in 2017's Spider-Man: Homecoming. And we can't forget that ninjas from The Hand also make an appearance in the trailer, alongside The Punisher, who was first introduced in Marvel Comics as a Spider-Man villain.
So, with that said, who the heck is the villain of Brand New Day? Or does there even need to be a singular villain for the movie? After all, No Way Home featured a mix of Spider-Man villains from previous Spidey movies.
In a recent interview with GQ, Spider-Man himself, Tom Holland, addressed the final touches that are being put on Brand New Day. "I can positively say that the stuff we’re doing, we don’t need... The movie works and sings as it is. We’re just adding the icing on the cake in certain areas. We’re finding some ways to add a little bit more humor. We’re layering in a villain plotline in a new way and some really fun stuff."
"Layering in a villain plotline in a new way," eh? That's curious, given the number of villains confirmed to appear in the film. We can all speculate now which character's arc is getting beefed up in this last round of reshoots.
Look, I'm not one to tell director Destin Daniel Cretton what to do. But the array of Spider-Man villains in Brand New Day does bring me back to Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3, which featured Harry Osborn's Green Goblin, Topher Grace's Venom, and Thomas Haden Church's Sandman all in the same film. Emo Peter Parker dancing down the streets of Soho aside, Spider-Man 3 possesses a particular chaos that I've grown fond of over the years. Why was there so much going on in one movie? Who knows. And it remains to be seen whether Brand New Day will succeed where Spider-Man 3 failed in the eyes of everyone more sane than I.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be out in theaters July 31, 2026.
