What is taking Beyond the Spider-Verse so long? The need to do something new

When you're making the biggest animated Spider-Man movie ever, you need to make sure it looks good on IMAX screens too.

It has been nearly three years since our last trip to the Spider-Verse (since this year’s Spider-Noir makes it clear it doesn’t count), and fans are, predictably, getting impatient. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the writers and producers of both Spider-Verse films, are hard at work on the sequel, Beyond the Spider-Verse. The problem is that they’re trying something new with their third Spider-Man film and it is eating up their time.

“We’re deep, deep in it,” insisted Christopher Miller in a recent podcast appearance. The current challenge is that they’re making sure Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse looks just as good on expanded IMAX screens as it does on standard cinema screens. “We’re actually going today to the IMAX headquarters to see what the footage looks like at scale, and make sure that it has the resolution that it needs to look gorgeous. We’re chugging away in the edit room with the team, and it’s coming together really well.”

Another issue is, expectedly, that there is a lot of plot to wrap up in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, especially considering the cliffhanger ending to Across the Spider-Verse. “It’s a lot of movie, and a lot to do,” Miller continued. “You got to keep doing something that hasn’t been done before. That’s all you got to do. Easy!”

Right now, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is scheduled to be released on June 18, 2027, though all these trips to the IMAX headquarters to test the footage might slow it down a bit. All in the name of trying something new.
