Sonic the Hedgehog is getting his own Avengers style "event film" in 2028 and we can't figure out what is going on
Is this the dawn of the Sonic the Hedgehog Cinematic Universe? Or are we getting some sort of Super Smash Bros. style crossover? Let the wild speculation begin!

When you’re the fastest thing alive, you can be a lot of places at once. Sonic the Hedgehog has become a massive box office win for Paramount, and now the studio is aiming to capitalize on his popularity. Not only is Sonic the Hedgehog 4 coming to cinemas in 2027, but a new, untitled film in the franchise has been confirmed for 2028. What exactly is the mysterious “Sonic Universe Event Film” that has been announced?
We’ve already had a Knuckles TV show in 2024, so it is clear that Paramount and Sega want to expand on the Sonic the Hedgehog films they have created. The first three movies have grossed over $1 billion at the box office, so a fourth was quickly announced. This is different from that movie; it has been described as a “Sonic Universe Event Film,” which sounds like it is similar to an Avengers movie in the MCU. While Sonic 4 has been confirmed for March 19, 2027, this new movie has a release date of December 22, 2028.
That is literally all we know. If it were a straight sequel, surely Paramount would have just called it Sonic 5, right? Unless something drastic happens in Sonic the Hedgehog 4, there isn’t an obvious crossover property for a Sonic Universe film. Unless they do something truly wild and drag the Mario and Legend of Zelda movies into some sort of Super Smash Bros. shared universe thing, we’re genuinely at a loss about what this new Sonic the Hedgehog movie is going to entail.
The untitled Sonic Universe Event Film is out on December 22, 2028, and we can’t quite wrap our heads around it even as we know we’ll be there when it opens.
