Do you want to feel old for a second? It has been 25 years since Shanghai Noon came out. The action comedy starred Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson in the Old West and was a fun mixture of martial arts, slapstick comedy, and more romance than we honestly expected, gaining enough of an audience to spawn a sequel in 2003. Since then, there have been numerous reports of a potential third movie in the series, but it has always been hung up by one person; Jackie Chan.

During an interview to promote the upcoming second season of Wednesday on Netflix, co-creators and showrunners Al Gough and Miles Millar were asked about the status of the long-awaited Shanghai Noon sequel, Shanghai Dawn, since the pair also wrote the screenplay for that. It seems that they came close a few times to making it happen, but it was always hung up by something.

“We would love to make a third one and close out that trilogy, and we came close eight years ago,” Gough explained. “We had broken a story. [Jackie Chan] circled it. [Owen Wilson] wanted to do it.”

Currently, the hold up is Jackie Chan himself, though the iconic martial arts actor is still apparently interested. “Funny enough, I just heard from Jackie a couple weeks ago, talking about it again,” Gough added. “We serve at the pleasure of Jackie on that.”

Of course, the pair of Gough and Millar have a lot on their plate at the moment, with Wednesday season two set to debut on August 6, 2025 and a third season already greenlit by Netflix. Still, there is always the chance that they will find the time to fit that Shanghai Noon sequel in at some point.
