DC Studios is "really excited" about a Sgt. Rock movie, but James Gunn says they let go of the original director already
Daniel Craig is not attached to star in the Sgt. Rock film and the movie has since been pulled from the DC Studios production slate.

As you might expect when they have basically thrown all their known continuity out the door, things are very much up in the air at DC Studios. Because James Gunn doesn’t like to greenlight movies before he has a final script, there are a lot of projects floating in pre-production limbo at DC Studios. One of these is the Sgt. Rock film that was first announced back in 2024 but hasn’t had any positive update since. However, James Gunn is still hopeful that the Sgt. Rock movie will get made one day.
When asked on the Happy Sad Confused podcast if he still had hopes that the Sgt. Rock movie would get made, James Gunn answered, “Hugely. I’m really excited about Sgt. Rock.” There was a bit of bad news mixed in, though. Gunn confirmed that the originally-intended director Luca Guadagnino wouldn’t be involved in the movie.
It has been a struggle to bring Sgt. Rock onto the big screen, but not for lack of trying on James Gunn’s part. The film was first announced in 2024 with Luca Guadagnino, who has been nominated for an Academy Award for his film Call Me By Your Name, attached to direct. Then it was announced that Daniel Craig was in talks to play the lead. However, by 2025, the movie, which was now set to star Colin Farrell, had been pulled from the production schedule.
James Gunn might be excited for a Sgt. Rock movie, but that doesn’t mean we’ll actually get one anytime soon. Even with Superman providing a solid foundation for the DCU, they’re going to at least need a director and a star before they can do Sgt. Rock justice.
