Scream co-creator Kevin Williamson wants to make one more great horror series before he dies
Williamson, one of the minds behind not just the Scream franchise but also I Know What You Did Last Summer and The Faculty, still wants one more iconic horror staple under his belt

It's one of the rules of the slasher genre: every horror icon has one last scare in them before they go. On screen, that usually translates to an Act III jumpscare that buttons up the survivor vs. killer arc with a bang, but there's a way that rule makes it out into the real world as well. That's in the case of Scream co-creator Kevin Williamson, who recently spoke out about a wish he had as he approaches his own Act III - that is, to make at least one more seminal horror franchise.
Williamson brought up the subject in an interview with The Ankler, published March 26. In case you don't already know, writer/producer/director Williamson not only was the originator of the story that would become the Scream franchise, but also sparked the still-running I Know What You Did Last Summer films and is the mind behind 1998 cult classic The Faculty. But in his chat with The Ankler, Williamson's killer eye was on the future.
"What I’d love to do before I die is to create another horror franchise," said the horror icon and frequent Wes Craven collaborator, "But that all starts with just one movie… You have to make one great movie and see what happens."
Even if you haven't been in the scary cinema biz for as long as Williamson has, you know that's true. There's no such thing as a horror franchise without a first entry that hits it big at the box office (or perhaps, as used to be the case, hits it big with physical media sales later). So we have to ask the question - in what area of the horror landscape is Williamson looking to make his next deep cut? He's obviously had great success with the slasher genre, but where is there a place for his clever, often darkly humorous style in the era of the "elevated" horror movie, where fright flicks are not only everyone's favorite social commentaries, but Oscar winners as well?
Wherever Williamson goes next, we'd bet that his future projects will prove another seminal rule of the slasher genre: there's always a next chapter for an icon that's scary enough.
