Sorry, MCU fans: Scarlett Johansson is saying for sure she will not return as Black Widow for Avengers: Doomsday
Plenty of former Marvel stars are returning for Avengers: Doomsday, but don't expect to see Scarlett Johansson among them (unless this is one hell of a negotiating tactic)

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, Black Widow fans, but don't expect to see Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff in Avengers: Doomsday. Even though former Marvel stars like Ian McKellen, Rebecca Romijn, Alan Cumming, and James Marsden are returning for Doomsday, it seems that some heroes like Black Widow are staying dead for good.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Johansson said, "It would be very hard for me to understand in what capacity [returning] would make sense for me, for the character that I play. I miss my buddies and really would love to be with them forever, but what works about the character is that her story is complete. I don’t want to mess with that. For fans too — it’s important for them.”
This makes a lot of sense: Black Widow's death in Avengers: Endgame was one of the film's biggest emotional beats. And the fact that Nat didn't even have her first solo movie hit theaters until after she died in Endgame was already a questionable move (Thanks, Ike Perlmutter). Tacking on more and more Black Widow appearances after she made THE ultimate sacrifice just doesn't do her character justice!
And look, I wanted to see Johansson's Natasha Romanoff get to do more Black Widow stuff in the movies or TV shows just as much as the next guy - I'm bummed we never got to see her and Daredevil team up in the comics like they do all the time - but a character's arc has got to be honored. At least we have Florence Pugh's Yelena Belova to root for in Doomsday.
