Do Goonies and Gremlins take place in the same universe? It's complicated, say Corey Feldman and Sean Astin
The Goonies and Gremlins share a producer, a writer, and a star - but do they take place in the same world? Corey Feldman isn't sure

There’s a school of thought that two Steven Spielberg productions of the 1980s share more than just some behind-the-screen talent — but what does star Corey Feldman think of the idea that two of his own movies, 1984’s Gremlins and 1985’s The Goonies, take place in the same cinematic universe?
“I guess because Chris Columbus wrote both films, but it would be kind of impossible for it to actually be in the same universe, because I can't be two people at once,” Feldman argued when asked about the topic during the Goonies Never Say Die panel at Rose City Comic Con 2025. “I mean, I could, but he lived in Gremlinstown, whatever the name of that damn town was, and then, there was the town the Goonies lived in, right? It's two different worlds, so I can't be the same guy. But that said, Jeff Cohen does make that joke as Chunk, when the police officer says, ‘Oh, you were calling about the little green men’. With that right there, there was the crossover? So, maybe they both existed.”
Feldman’s Goonies co-star Sean Astin has a more holistic view of the crossover between the movies.
“Both movies captured a moment in time,” Astin offered. “A feeling of a kind of innocence and adventure and exploration and, like, just childhood wonder. I think, to me, they could absolutely co-exist.”
Clearly someone needs to ask Chris Columbus about this — and whether The Goonies’ Mouth had a doppelgänger in another small town elsewhere in America around the same time. Stranger things have happened — and I don’t necessarily mean the Netflix show.
