The new Resident Evil movie is unlike anything the franchise has done before — by design
Resident Evil director Zach Cregger was given "carte blanche" to reboot the movie franchise in whatever way he wanted to

If you're a Resident Evil fan like me, chances are you have high hopes for Zach Cregger's upcoming film adaptation of the classic Capcom franchise. We, as Resident Evil fans, have not all collectively fought horrors beyond comprehension only for movie studios to absolutely bungle everything that makes the games work in their movie adaptations. The recent wave of Resident Evil video game remakes has only underscored this further. If Capcom can keep some of the campiness of the original Resident Evil 4 game, for instance, while also dialing up the emotional journey that Leon S. Kennedy goes on in the Resident Evil 4 Remake, then impossible is nothing, I'm sorry.
Anyways, the Resi community is in the coveted position of having a firebrand creative like Zach Cregger at the helm of the next big screen adaptation. Cregger has proved he was more than up to the task of finally giving the world a good Resident Evil movie when he made his debut film, Barbarian, in 2023. And his subsequent releases, Companion (which he produced) and last year's Weapons (which he was director, writer, producer, and composer on) have solidified his status as one of the best horror filmmakers working today. I am a grizzled, sometimes even jaded fan of horror movies, and Cregger's films have been like a defibrillator.
Thankfully, Constantin Film, the production company behind Resident Evil movies of the past, is recognizing Cregger's prowess. As per Deadline, Constantin gave Cregger "the carte blanche to do whatever he wanted to do with that IP," says exec Oliver Berben. “With Resident Evil, we have had an incredible journey with one of the most successful international IPs of more than a billion dollars in box office for many years and now we are creating something new, not just a new story idea, but to allow a new generation to take the IP into their own hands and form something different.”
Berben also said that Cregger's film is “far away from everything that is connected to Resident Evil, only because Zach Cregger has his own style.” Gloria a las plagas!
Cregger's Resident Evil movie is expected to fly into theaters on September 18, 2026.
