Director Jared Hess is enjoying the mania surrounding A Minecraft Movie, but others are unconvinced — with one theater in the UK going so far as to threaten to throw out anyone who’s enjoying the movie a little too much.
"It's been so bananas," Hess told Entertainment Weekly about the fan reaction in theaters, videos of which have been going viral pretty much as soon as the movie opened. (We’ve already talked about “chicken jockey,” for the curious.) "It's been way too fun,” he continued. “People are sending me these really hilarious speeches that a lot of teenagers are giving right before the movie. It's so hysterical, man. I'm staying up way too late."
Not everyone agrees, with one movie theater in the UK posting a notice that promises, “any form of anti-social behavior, especially anything that may disturb other guests such as loud screaming, clapping and shouting will not be tolerated.” The notice continues to say that those “found to be acting in this manner will be removed from the screening and not entitled to a refund.”
It’s not only uptight Britons who’re upset about the enthusiastic response to the movie, with reports on social media about police being called to screenings in the United States. Hess is taking it all in his stride.
“It's weird when you're having too much fun and the cops get called. It's funny because I think it's just literally cheering and throwing popcorn, which is so funny to me that cops are getting called for popcorn,” Hess told EW. “Yeah, it's hilarious. I've seen so many funny videos. It's great, especially when people are climbing on their friends' shoulders and standing up and cheering for those moments. It's like this crazy anticipation.”
A Minecraft Movie, with its many viral moments, is in theaters now.
