A Minecraft Movie is doing very, very well at the box office, as you may have seen Popverse report earlier. It's the biggest domestic debut of the year, Variety expands, and the best opening for a video game movie in cinematic history. So, naturally, the conversation has already begun about what a potential sequel to the Jack Black and Jason Momoa film might be. And if Warner Bros. is interested, director Jared Hess is in.
Speaking with GamesRadar on the day of the film's release, Hess said that "it'd be so much fun" to make a followup to the feature, predominantly because of the gargantuan world still left to explore from the game.
"I mean, look," Hess told his interviewe, "The world's infinite, so many amazing mods and characters and biomes we haven't explored yet, so it'd be amazing."
Which characters or biomes Hess would like to explore, he's not saying (probably a wise movie, from a legal standpoint). However, we can extrapolate from the director's comments about the film's antagonists, the Piglins, what kinds of cultures he might like to dive into.
"I'm obsessed with the Piglins. I think they're super gnarly and funny and gross and strange, and I love their weird barbarian culture [...] They're cannibals. They're obsessed with gold, and just thought that they would be such fun villains, but they've also got a unique story."
Gnarly, funny, gross, and strange - sounds an awful lot like the Drowned, wouldn't you say? Jared, if you're listening, this is a pitch.
