Minecraft puts Marvel on notice with the biggest opening weekend of the year, looking set to make more in 1 week than Captain America 4 did in 2 months

Jack Black and Jason Momoa star in what is almost certainly going to be the biggest movie of the year unless Marvel's Thunderbolts* or Fantastic Four movies really surprise us.

When you try to bring the best-selling video game of all time to life, expectations are high. Still, we didn’t see the Minecraft movie having quite the opening weekend that it did. Recognizable stars like Jack Black and Jason Momoa were clearly a draw for fans, helping to propel Minecraft to the best box office opening weekend of 2025 so far, easily eclipsing the MCU’s latest Captain America movie in the process. Marvel is going to have a lot of catching up to do at this point.

The good news for A Minecraft Movie began on Friday when it posted a $58 million opening day at the box office. That led to $157 million at the box office by the end of Sunday, giving it one of the best opening weekends in history and surpassing The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s first three days. If it keeps up this momentum, it is possible (and even likely) that A Minecraft Movie will make more in its first week than Captain America: Brave New World made in its entire theatrical run. It doesn't look like even Thunderbolts* or The Fantastic Four: First Steps will have a chance of beating these numbers.

We’re not entirely surprised that A Minecraft Movie is doing so well at the box office. The game itself is a global phenomenon and has fans of all ages and backgrounds. Still, an opening weekend of more than $150 million was well above anyone’s projections and puts Minecraft on pace to potentially be the biggest movie of the year, despite critics hammering the film’s plot. At this point, the biggest question is how long until Warner Bros. greenlight a sequel.
