How big is A Minecraft Movie? It’s not only the most successful movie of the year after a second weekend in theaters brought in $80.6 million, but it’s also pretty much singlehandedly brought the entire 2025 North American box office into parity with its 2024 counterpart, up from being 20% down before the release of the movie. And that’s not all.

By the end of its second weekend, A Minecraft Movie had made upwards of $281 million in North America, and an additional $296.6 million internationally, bringing in $550.6 million in total. Not bad for a movie budgeted around $150 million to make. Impressively, even though the movie dropped about 50% in terms of box office take in its second weekend — it opened with $162.8 million — it earned so much in that second weekend that it was the third most successful weekend haul for a movie in North America so far this year, behind its own opening weekend and the opening of Captain America: Brave New World. That movie took in $88.8 million in its opening.

At this point, it’s looking as if A Minecraft Movie might be first movie to cross the billion dollar mark this year globally — and it’s almost guaranteed to hold the crown for biggest opening weekend for a few months, at least; the closest thing it might have to competition until mid-summer would be Marvel’s Thunderbolts*, but that movie is tracking to make in the region of $70 million, according to current estimates. (Or, as we call it now, ‘less than half a Minecraft.’)

It’s worth noting that Minecraft’s $296.6 million in its second weekend included $20.5 million from China — a notable amount and perhaps the last time a US movie might make that kind of impact there, as the country is planning to limit US movie releases as part of the ongoing trade war President Trump has launched with the world.
