The first Thor film came out all the way back in 2011, and it was directed by Kenneth Branagh, of all people. The now Oscar-winning director-writer-actor aggressively pursued the chance to direct the Thor movie adaptation for Marvel Studios, flying himself out to Los Angeles to meet with studio head Kevin Feige himself and express his enthusiasm. As it turned out, Branagh's background in theatre and Shakespeare in particular helped shape his take on the strongest Avenger in his first MCU outing.
Since then, however, Branagh hasn't returned to the director's chair for a Thor sequel film. But would he ever go back for another outing? In an interview with Business Insider, Branagh looked back on his experiences directing the first Thor film and shared his willingness to helm a "final story" for the character.
"Part of me would love to finish my relationship with that character. I'd always wanted to do more and indeed had a couple of ideas, more in the territory of James Mangold's brilliant Logan. I would love to see Chris Hemsworth and the others have their own individual final story that takes Thor into a glorious twilight," said Branagh.
Look, Branagh won an Oscar for writing the 2021 movie Belfast (in addition to earning a directing nomination), so I don't doubt that he would be able to come up with a "glorious twilight" for Thor to be thrown down one final time. The Asgardian and cosmic elements of his Thor film look great fifteen years later - those Frost Giants looked so creepy, man - and with the advancements in visual effects and in other areas of film production since then, what could Branagh cook up now?
We're waiting, Marvel Studios.
