Marvel layoffs hit around 7% of staff, impacting movies, TV, and comics amid broader Disney cuts

Marvel is laying off between 7 and 8% of its workforce across all divisions of the company as a result of wider Disney cost-cutting moves

Multiple Marvel employees have been laid off as part of wider cost-cutting moves by parent company Disney, with multiple reports citing that “most” departments of the company — Marvel Studios, Marvel Comics, and internal divisions including finance and legal — have been impacted.

The Walt Disney Company CEO Josh D’Amaro announced that around 1,000 positions inside the wider corporation would be eliminated Tuesday morning, via a memo distributed amongst employees. “Over the past several months, we have looked at ways in which we can streamline our operations in various parts of the company to ensure we deliver the world-class creativity and innovation our fans value and expect from Disney,” D'Amaro explained in the memo. “Given the fast-moving pace of our industries, this requires us to constantly assess how to foster a more agile and technologically-enabled workforce to meet tomorrow’s needs. As a result, we will be eliminating roles in some parts of the company and have begun notifying impacted employees.”

D’Amaro described the cuts as “difficult,” and added, “These decisions are not a reflection of [employee] contributions, or of the overall strength of the company. Rather, they reflect our continual evaluation of how to more effectively manage our resources and reinvest in our businesses.”

Marvel is losing around between 7 and 8% of its workforce as a result of the cuts, estimated at less than 50 people in total. Sources inside Marvel tell Popverse that earlier reports by others concerning deep cuts impacting Marvel Studios’ visual development department, the division responsible for character and concept design for movies and television headed up by Ryan Meinerding, are not correct and the department has not been left as a skeleton crew with plans to outsource all future development to freelancers.

This isn't the first time that Marvel has been impacted by Disney cost-cutting decisions; in 2024, around 15 employees were laid off in a previous round of layoffs, including four executives of the company - one of which was longtime chairman Ike Perlmutter

Prior to the layoff news, Marvel Studios was expected to be present as part of the Walt Disney Company's April 16 presentation at CinemaCon 2026 in Las Vegas, with December's Avengers: Doomsday being the studio's only theatrical release of 2026 and its most-anticipated theatrical release since 2019's Avengers: Endgame.

This is a developing story; expect more updates in the coming days and weeks.
