The heroes of the Marvel Universe are headed back to theaters this year for the MCU's next tentpole film, Avengers: Doomsday. But first, at least a few of them are stopping by LA, for an event that's just a shade less important than saving the universe (unless you're Timothée Chalamet). That's right, the folks behind the 98th Annual Academy Awards have confirmed a "reunion" for Marvel's heroes at the Oscars.
The news comes from an interview that Oscars executive producer Katy Mullan did with The Hollywood Reporter. After her fellow producer, Raj Kapoor, confirmed that there would be a Bridesmaid reunion on stage (now there's a multiverse crossover, Disney), Mullan pointed to the other reunion that should have MCU diehards buzzing.
"There’s also going to be a Marvel reunion for the superhero fans," Mullan said, "So we’re gonna have superstar superheroes, and there is also going to be an extraterrestrial on the stage. So you can figure that one out."
Respectfully Ms. Mullan, I don't know that we can? I mean, the obvious explanation for this would be if Josh Brolin was on stage - his Big Bad Thanos was both a non-human character from a different world and a villain, so one could understand why Mullan wouldn't group him with the other "superstar superheroes." But I mean, aren't there a bunch of MCU characters that are both not Avengers and not from Earth? After all, one of this year's attendees fits into both categories, and is also up for Best Supporting Actor in his role for One Battle After Another.
That's Benicio del Toro, by the way, or as Guardians of the Galaxy fans might know him, The Collector.
The 98th Academy Awards will stream on Hulu March 15th at 7PM EST. Avengers: Doomsday comes to theaters December 18.
