Avengers: Age of Ultron director Joss Whedon told Elizabeth Olsen that Wanda would never wear her red leotard or crown
Elizabeth Olsen was told that Scarlet Witch would never wear her classic Marvel Comics costume (but that changed when WandaVision came along)

Remember when comic book movies were afraid to make the characters look like comic book characters? It wasn’t that long ago when the X-Men movies mocked the idea of Wolverine wearing yellow spandex. There was a time when the genre was afraid to embrace its comic book roots out of fear of looking silly.
In fact, when Elizabeth Olsen was first cast as Scarlet Witch, she was specifically told she would not be wearing the character’s traditional comic book costume. “[Avengers: Age of Ultron director Joss Whedon] basically was explaining the character to me, the history of the character,” Elizabeth Olsen told the crowd during the Scarlet Witch and Beyond spotlight panel at C2E2 2026. “He also said, 'You’ll open up the comic books and you’ll see a woman in a red leotard with a crown on, and you won’t be dressed like that.' Little did he know that, eight years later, we would be trying to match it perfectly.”
Olsen is, of course, referring to Wanda finally donning the classic Scarlet Witch outfit in WandaVision. It first appeared as a colorful Halloween costume before she donned a more modern version in the series finale. The crown was fantastic, the costume didn’t look goofy, and the entire look was stunning. I’m glad Marvel Studios revisited their stance on superhero costumes, because when done right they really bring the comics to life.
WandaVision is streaming in full on Disney+.
