Marvel moves past variant comic covers to variant Avengers Doomsday trailers
Could there really be four different Avengers: Doomsday trailers headed to movie theaters this week?

Back in my day, before I knew how to read, if you wanted to see a specific movie trailer, you'd have to go buy a movie ticket at your local cinema for the chance to get a glimpse of whatever movie you were most looking forward to. Case in point: Star Wars fans bought tickets to see Meet Joe Black just so they could watch the trailer for The Phantom Menace. Unfortunately for some of these fans, they would dip right after The Phantom Menace trailer played, meaning that they missed seeing Brad Pitt speak Jamaican Patois in the movie. Their loss!
Now, since time and culture are apparently circular, something similar could be happening for Avengers: Doomsday when Avatar: Fire and Ash hits theaters later this week. As per The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision newsletter, "Sources are telling us the trailer for Avengers: Doomsday will have a unique rollout, one aimed at getting diehards to see Avatar: Fire and Ash multiple times. Get this: Disney is sending theaters four different trailers for the Marvel mega-movie — each will play for one week, before switching to the next."
What does that mean in practice? Potentially that you'll have to sit through the new Avatar movie four times if you want the full story. The outlet continued, "So, if you see Fire and Ash opening weekend, you’ll get trailer one. If you go a week later, you’ll get trailer two, and so on. Marvel had no comment on the rollout."
No mention is made of whether or not any of the teasers will be released online, but it's worth noting that Marvel and Disney is following in the footsteps of DC and Warner Bros. in a small way, here: WB attached an extended Superman clip to A Minecraft Movie in theaters earlier this year as a way of cross-pollinating the audiences for both movies, with no small level of success considering the box office results of each of the two. Perhaps Disney is hoping something similar will happen with this Avatar and Avengers pairing. (That clip was eventually released online, notably.)
Listen, if Avatar: Fire and Ash is even 75% as good as Avatar: The Way of Water was, I'll see it four times in theaters. Big James Cameron doesn't waste my time when it comes to making an unforgettable theater experience. I remember swatting the air around my face during one scene in my screening of The Way of Water, because the 3D effects were so detailed and immersive that I literally thought there were flies buzzing around me. Here's to hoping that the rumors are true.
