Lord of the Rings fans like to have hobbies. Whether it's learning Elvish, making maps, working on cosplay, scuttling around barefoot in a loincloth, or crafting, there's a way to tie in your interests to the wonderful world of Middle-earth. Gimli himself, played by John Rhys-Davies, has discovered this firsthand.
Speaking with our video producer Ashley Victoria-Robinson at C2E2 2025 as part of our Popversations video interview series, Rhys-Davies revealed that he hasn't bought any action figures of any characters he's played. But he is fond of the gifts he's received of the fiber arts persuasion. "People knit me Gimlis," Rhys-Davies began. "I've got a wonderful set of knitted Gimlis. And one or two tiny ones that I hang on a Christmas tree, because obviously Gimli and Santa Claus are very distantly related."
Now, I'm curious as to what these knitted Gimlis look like. Of course, Rhys-Davies has a couple of small knitted Gimlis, so does that imply the existence of large knitted Gimlis? And I wonder if the fans who made these gifts for Rhys-Davies have made any other knitted figures of other Lord of the Rings characters. I think a knitted version of Gollum sounds both delightful and horrifying, which is exactly the kind of vibe that Peter Jackson's films were going for (I mean this as a compliment). As a knitter myself, I am left wondering how one would go about knitting a life-size Ent.
