Even before Five Nights at Freddy's 2 is out, Matthew Lillard and Jason Blum tease a third movie - and which major character he would kill in it

If the new movie is a success, everyone would be "very excited" to make a third - and Matthew Lillard knows what will happen in it

Matthew Lillard is horror movie royalty, given a resume that includes Scream, Scooby-Doo, and far more — but that doesn’t mean he’s not grateful for the chance to bring Five Nights at Freddy’s icon William Afton to life on the big screen… and that he’s particularly excited for what’s going to happen for Afton next if this year’s second installment in the series is a box office hit.

“I know how much this character means to the fanbase, and I have been embraced with love in so many ways, so thank you for having me,” Lillard said during a video appearance at the San Diego Comic-Con 2025 panel for Five Nights at Freddy’s 2. But that wasn’t the real reason he wanted to talk to the fans.

“You guys, the movie is going to be so good,” he continued. “The movie’s gonna be sick, please go check it out. Because if you check it out, and if it’s a hit, they’re gonna make a third movie and then I get to kill Mike Schmidt. I’m gonna kill him, bro.”

Schmidt is, of course, the main (human) character of the movies, as played by Josh Hutcherson. If William Afton — well, Springtrap, really, considering what audiences learned at the end of the first movie — gets his wish, it’s going to be “cinematic magic,” Lillard teased.

Wishful thinking? Well, not exactly. As executive producer Jason Blum told a fan later in the same panel, “if enough people go and see the movie, we’d be very excited to make Five Nights at Freddy’s 3. Very excited.”

Don’t get too comfortable with that 'being alive' thing, Mike. Things might not work out the way you want them to in the long run if audiences are game enough.

Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 will be released December 5.
