DC's Joker sequel earns an R rating for "some sexuality and brief full nudity" for Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga's upcoming caper

Its a mad, mad, mad world

The return of Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker is nearly upon us as Joker: Folie à Deux is due out at the start of October 2024. This time, Arthur Fleck isn’t alone, though: he’s joined by the Joker’s perpetual partner in crime, Harley Quinn. Played by Lady Gaga, Harley joins Joker on his new rampage through Gotham, but the age rating for Joker: Folie à Deux suggests this will be a far cry from the duo’s animated adventures.

Just like its predecessor, Joker: Folie à Deux is rated R, with the MPA saying that the film contained “some strong violence, language throughout, some sexuality and brief full nudity.” This is very much in line with how the first film was rated. It also got an R rating for “strong bloody violence, disturbing behavior, language and brief sexual images.”

Obviously, we didn’t expect Todd Phillips to tone down his take on the Clown Prince of Crime for the sequel, but it is interesting to see a slightly stronger emphasis on sex over the violence present in the first film. It makes sense, seeing as Joker: Folie à Deux introduces the most famous love interest the Joker has had through the years. The addition of Harley Quinn, if the trailer is anything to go by, seems to push Joker into escalating his chaotic and violent behavior to new heights.

Joker: Folie à Deux is out on October 4, 2024 in the US but it comes out two days earlier in many international markets.
