Die Hard with Orcas: John Travolta trades summer lovin' for summer chompin' in Deep Blue Sea director Renny Harlin's 3rd killer sea creatures movie

Black Tides is the title of the Travolta-starring orca thriller, presumably because someone already has the rights to 'Pulp Fishin'

Remember last summer, when all those orcas were attacking rich people's yachts? Well, Hollywood has unsurprisingly gotten its hands on the idea, and is set to turn it into an action thriller (albeit with sympathetic orcas). And the man they've chosen to captain their ship is none other than Danny Zuko himself, John Travolta. Deadline has the story.

While John Travolta's involvement is sure to turn heads, it's director Renny Harlin we'd like to briefly turn your periscope toward. Harlin has directed such pulse-pounding tales as Die Hard to and the recent, three-part batch of The Stranger films, but the reason we'd like to turn your attention to him has nothing to do with those land-lubber flicks. See, this is not the director's first, nor second, but third film that takes place out on the Ocean Blue. Before this, Harlin helmed 1999's Deep Blue Sea and the 2025, Aaron Eckhart-starring Deep Water.

Alright, now since I'm sure you came here for the Vincent Vega of it all - let's talk Travolta. According to Deadline, the Blow Out star will play a character called Bill Pierce. Pierce is an estranged father looking to reconnect to his daughter and grandson via a sailing trip off the coast of Spain. Unfortunately, that trip turns deadly when a pack of orcas descends upon his boat.

"John Travolta brings the perfect combination of grit, depth, vulnerability and charisma to the character of Bill Pierce," said Harlin in a statement. "I can’t wait to show fans of big screen cinema how his movie star presence and physicality will add gravity to the epic action sequences and deeply emotional personal drama. As a director, I consider myself fortunate to join a list of acclaimed filmmakers who’ve had the privilege of getting to know John as an artist and a person."

What Harlin doesn't mention is his feelings about being one of the first directors to bring TRavolta out into the open sea for an adventure, which you'd think would be at the top of his mind. After all, we're talking about John Travolta, the actor who started his whole career by...

Getting Sandy.

Black Tides is currently without a release date.
