Comedy is always a lot of fun, but there needs to be something more to it than a bunch of laughs. The best comedies make us feel something more and have real stakes that we can root for. Happy Gilmore is a great example of that, with Adam Sandler playing his usual buffoon character with the endearing goal of saving his grandma’s house. According to one of the stars of both the original and Happy Gilmore 2, that heart is what really makes both movies work.

“You know that Adam Sandler’s movies’ got a lot of heart in it,” Christopher McDonald, who played antagonist Shooter McGavin in the first movie and reprises his role in Happy Gilmore 2, told the host of The Daily Show. “And the first one had a lot of heart and was all about his grandma. So, it was kind of a great thing. He was fighting to get his grandma’s house back.”

According to the actor, that heart is still present in the long-awaited sequel, which focuses on Happy’s return to the world of golf to help pay for his daughter’s ballet classes. “And in this one… It’s amazing how much heart is in it. Julie Bowen is amazing. Adam [Sandler]’s amazing to work with. But he always fills it with heart and family, and that makes the world of difference. That’s why we go to the movies, to feel that kind of emotion. So, kudos to him.”

You can see that heart in action in Happy Gilmore 2, which is out now on Netflix.
