The underlying message of the Halloween movie (and all horror films) is we have to have hope or we’re fucked, says Jamie Lee Curtis

What is the message of Halloween? Maybe it’s that we need to watch out for masked strangers or stay away from deserted houses. Jamie Lee Curtis, who plays Laurie Strode in the Halloween franchise, has her own take on it. “We have to have hope. If we don’t have hope, we’re so fucked,” Jamie Lee Curtis says during a spotlight panel at New York Comic Con 2022.

Curtis goes on to say that this message is key in the 2022 film Halloween Ends, which shows us how hope helps Laurie survive. “There’s a moment in [Halloween Ends], there’s a time jump of four years. Now four years is high school. Who here went to high school? Was it as long for you as it was for me? Forever!”

“Laurie Strode has finally been given the help she always needed. She never got anything before and now Laurie Strode has been given grief therapy after the opera death of Karen at the end of [Halloween Kills]. Laurie Strode has been able to not only heal but learn to live alongside her grief. It doesn’t consume her; it allows her to exist. And maybe for a second you get this idea that maybe Laurie Strode is going to be okay.”

Curtis admits that things get worse for Strode after that scene, but the underlying point remains the same. Without hope, we can’t get through our roughest times. At the end of the day, that’s our best weapon against movie serial killers.
