Yes, Gremlins is a Christmas movie - and its star Zach Galligan explains why (and how Die Hard helped)

Tis the season for Gremlin mayhem. Or is it?
Like Die Hard, there has been some debate on whether the 1984 film Gremlins is a Christmas movie. The horror film takes place on Christmas Eve, and the gremlins are first introduced as potential Christmas presents. For some people, that might be enough, but others have very strict criteria about what should be classified as a Christmas movie.
(This conversation has been happening about Die Hard for years.)
Speaking to a crowd at GalaxyCon Columbus 2024, Zach Galligan, who plays Billy Peltzer in the movie, settled the issue once and for all.
“It doesn’t really matter anymore because the public decides what’s a Christmas movie or not,” Galligan said. “It’s funny, because you mention Die Hard, and I remember back in the day when Bruce Willis got up and said, ‘By the way, Die Hard is not a Christmas movie.’ And I kind of wanted to go, ‘Uh, excuse me sir. You’re just an actor in the movie. You don’t get to decide the Die Hard Christmas position. You’re just one simple person in the equation.’ A significant one, I will grant him that. But the public decides whether or not Die Hard is a Christmas movie, not you good sir.”
“Gremlins has become a Christmas movie, and I’m thrilled about that. Part of me is partially convinced that if it wasn’t for the seasonal theme in the movie, Gremlins may not have survived for all 40 years. One of the things that’s nice about it is we force you to watch it every December whether you want to or not. Whether you want to forget it or not, you can’t. It’s just shoved in your face. It’s like, it’s Christmas, it’s Gremlins time! Thank god for the seasonally, because it's just the gift that keeps on giving.”
