Beauty and the Beast bad guy gets his own Disney spinoff movie, from the writer of Shang-Chi

No one spins off like Gaston, especially when it means he gets his own movie, reportedly in the works at Disney

Gaston is a man who does things his own way, from hunting, fighting, and spitting. Now, Disney wants to give the Beauty and the Beast antagonist a fresh start. They recently announced that they are developing a live-action spinoff film about the buff, abrasive character, possibly trying to channel some of the girl-boss energy from Emma Stone’s Cruella film for the bros out there.

The sole detail we know about the Gaston live-action film is that it is being written by David Callaham, who co-wrote Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. No director is currently attached to direct, and it isn’t expected that Luke Evans will reprise his role from the 2017 live-action Beauty and the Beast film.

Gaston is an interesting character in Disney history. While he is treated as a villain in the original animated film, he is more of an ignorant jerk than a true villain. Sure, he leads a mob against the Beast’s castle, but that’s mainly because he suddenly found out there is a beast in a castle and got scared. The live-action film gave him more of a villainous streak as he actively tried to kill Belle’s father, but that isn’t the case in the animated film.

If Disney does try to recreate the Cruella formula of reimagining a classic villain in a more heroic role, Gaston has the potential to be one of their more redeemable characters. No release date for the Beauty and the Beast spinoff starring Gaston has been announced yet.
