A Minecraft Movie, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, and next month’s Mortal Kombat II have already proven that video games are the new superheroes when it comes to box office blockbusters, and now Sony Columbia Pictures is getting into the game with the news that Metal Gear Solid is coming to the big screen, courtesy of the filmmakers behind last year’s Final Destination: Bloodlines.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, filmmakers Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein will direct the first big screen adaptation of the Hideo Kojima-created video game, which will be produced by former Marvel executive Avi Arad and his son, Ari. (The two have previously worked on a number of Marvel movies, including the first Iron Man.)

In a statement, Lipovsky and Stein said, “Metal Gear Solid was nothing short of a groundbreaking cinematic masterpiece that forever revolutionized video games. We are thrilled and honored to bring Hideo Kojima’s iconic characters and unforgettable world to life.”

Metal Gear Solid launches a new deal between Sony and the filmmakers, whose company Wonderlab will develop not just future projects for them to direct, but also features that they’ll produce for other filmmakers, with the intent being to create “wildly fun, commercial, character-driven, genre-bending” features, according to THR’s report. Under the deal, Wonderlab will be responsible for releases across all of Sony’s studios — in fact, Lipovsky and Stein are already attached to a Venom feature for Sony Pictures Animation and Columbia Pictures’ The Earthling, an original sci-fi live-action feature.

No release date has been announced for Metal Gear Solid, but that is likely to change within a few months; the project is likely to be a priority for Sony as the video game movie market continues to grow.
