George R.R. Martin is finally getting the Game of Thrones movie he talked about ten years ago
All the way back in 2014, A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin spoke about a cinematic future for Westeros... and now, Warner Bros. may be making that a reality

The primary requirement for a George R.R. Martin fan isn't a deep understanding of Westeros lore - it's patience. Apparently, that's even the case if you are Martin himself - not only have we just learned that Warner Bros. is developing a Game of Thrones movie, but we were also reminded of the fact that Martin has been talking about one for a full decade. Read on for details.
The story comes to us from The Hollywood Reporter, who clarify that, though the project has already been in quiet development at Warner Bros., no writer, director, or cast has been attached. That's not much to go on in the details department, but as THR points out, it does signify an interesting shift in Warner Bros.'s plan for the franchise, which up until now has been exclusively adapted for the small screen screen by HBO. It's a change that many fans probably didn't see coming.
But for creator Martin, it's been a long time coming.
In 2014, Martin spoke to THR regarding the future of Westeros's adapted universe, saying that he could see a movie (or series of movies) might be a good next step for the Game of Thrones universe, whose original series was still running at the time.
"It all depends on how long the main series runs," Martin said. "[The show] might need a feature to tie things up, something with a feature budget, like $100 million for two hours. Those dragons get real big, you know."
Regarding what that feature would be about, Martin suggested that it could take inspiration from his Tales of Dunk and Egg novella series, set before the events of Game of Thrones. Now, anything is still possible, but we sort of doubt that this would be the subject of the movie Warner Bros. is developing now. Why? Because Tales of Dunk and Egg is already getting an adaptation; it's the basis of the upcoming HBO-produced prequel series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, which is slated to come out in 2025.
Whatever the upcoming Game of Thrones film is about and however it ties into HBO's several TV series is still very much under wraps, if it's been decided at all. We're just going to have to wait for more details but, hey, that wait time likely won't be the full decade that Martin had.
The full Game of Thrones series, and House of the Dragon seasons 1 and 2, are streaming now on Max.
House of the Dragon season 2 may be over, but Popverse is still in the Westeros spirit, and we've got more Game of Thrones articles than could fit on a spiky chair.
