Guillermo del Toro is planning to change his entire moviemaking style: "I feel like I need a change"

The release of Frankenstein on Netflix marks the end of the current era of del Toro filmmaking.

There has seldom been a director with a more distinctive style than Guillermo del Toro. The man has a visual signature that has a haunting beauty to it. Even if you don’t like the movie he’s made, it is undeniably gorgeous to look at. Now, after decades of cementing his reputation as one of the most visually stunning directors of all time, Guillermo del Toro says he is ready for a change after finally closing the book on Frankenstein.

“This movie closes the cycle,” Guillermo del Toro said in a recent interview with Empire. “If you look at the lineage, from Cronos to The Devil’s Backbone, to Pan’s Labyrinth to Crimson Peak to this, this is an evolution of a certain type of aesthetic, and a certain type of rhythm, and a certain type of empathy. I feel like I need a change.”

What exactly that change is doesn’t seem to include not making movies anymore, but he may be ready to update his style to where he’s feeling now. However, even he admits he may change his mind. “You never know. The day after tomorrow, I may want to do Jekyll & Hyde, or whatever. But right now, my desire is to try and do something very different.”

Frankenstein is out on Netflix on November 7, 2025 and marks the end of this chapter of Guillermo del Toro’s career and, hopefully, the beginning of an exciting new era of his films. Because a world without del Toro movies is a world with less grotesque beauty and tortured joy in it.
