If you’re waiting for Sydney Sweeney’s Barbarella movie, get comfortable, because we’re still in the early stages - despite it being more than three years since the project was initially announced.
In 2022, it was reported that Euphoria star Sydney Sweeney would be producing and starring in a new Barbarella film, adapting the French sci-fi comic (most famous in the U.S. for its 1968 adaptation into a Jane Fonda movie). It’s been nearly four years since the project was announced, and there is still no release date. However, Edgar Wright, who signed on to direct the film in 2024, says the movie is still alive, but the script isn’t complete yet.
“It’s still in the script stage,” Edgar Wright said during a panel at GalaxyCon Richmond 2026. “There is a script that’s been written and we’re still working on that. There’s not really any updates on that beyond it’s kind of in the script development stage basically.”
To be fair, Hollywood had a major writers and actors strike in 2023, which halted production on a lot of projects. Wright has also been busy with his version of The Running Man - a movie that also spent multiple years in development and pre-production, with Wright attached for four years before it made it into theaters; by comparison, he's only been on Barbarella for two - and Sweeney has also had an active career. Neither seems to have given up on Barbarella, so hopefully it’s only a matter of time before production begins.
In the meantime, the 1968 Barbarella is currently streaming on MGM+, as well as Pluto.
