Hugh Jackman has played Wolverine since 2000. That’s 24 years of Jackman/Wolverine! In fact, it’s actually 24 years of many different versions of Jackman’s Wolverine, from the dark leather, to gruff old Logan, to Deadpool and Wolverine’s yellow spandex.
But what about the future of the character? Hugh Jackman can’t just keep playing Logan forever, can he? Well, maybe he can for a little while longer. But what about year 2058?
Discussing Film recently pressed this question to Marvel mastermind Kevin Feige in an exclusive interview, and Feige had a very comic book-y answer in response. “As comic readers know, there have been various and very, very different versions of these characters over the decades,” Feige said, “It would be fun to explore different ones someday down the line. Again, we don’t have immediate plans by any means. But in the decades to come, I think it’s inevitable.”
For those who are gasping into their handkerchiefs, Feige did have a caveat. He thinks that anyone who is trying to copy what Jackman did is doomed to fail. Feige told Discussing Film, “If that happens, it would have to be a very different and bold reinterpretation of [the character] because no one will be as great as Hugh Jackman at doing his version of Wolverine.”
Who do you think would make for a good future Wolverine once Hugh Jackman finally hangs up his claws? Comment below and let us know.
