DC Studios adds a Green Lantern to Man of Tomorrow - but which one?

James Gunn's next DC Universe movie, Man of Tomorrow, is bringing in a familiar face as Green Lantern

The cast of the Superman follow-up film, Man of Tomorrow, is expanding with the addition of a Green Lantern character: Aaron Pierre's John Stewart. John Stewart's Green Lantern will join the fray alongside Superman (David Corenswet), Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult), and Brainiac (Lars Eidinger) in Man of Tomorrow, which is expected to hit theaters in July 2027.

Variety reports that John Stewart will be meeting Superman in Man of Tomorrow next summer. The question remains whether or not he'll also be meeting his fellow Green Lantern, Guy Gardner. Based on Guy's characterization in Superman last summer, I can't imagine that he'd be particularly happy to share the spotlight with another human Lantern, but I also love for characters to prove me wrong.

Based on the Lanterns teaser that we've gotten, the version of John Stewart in the DC Universe is very similar to his comic book counterpart: cool, calm, and collected. In the teaser, Kyle Chandler's Hal Jordan suddenly jumps out of a moving car, leaving John to take the wheel as the car veers over a cliff. And John saunters back to his fellow Lantern afterwards with a look of mild annoyance, saying, "I could've died" in the same cadence that one might use to say, "We could've been late to the movies." In other words, it takes a lot to rattle John Stewart's cage.

If you're a Green Lantern reader, this attitude is familiar. In DC Comics, John Stewart was a Marine who later became an architect. Whether it's remaining clear-headed in the midst of combat or navigating a predominantly white industry like architecture as a Black man, John Stewart has been tested time and time again, without even needing to put a Lantern ring on. Since Superman is going up against Brainiac, he'll need a steady and responsible ally like John Stewart to get the job done.

Man of Tomorrow is expected to be released on July 9, 2027.
