Guy Gardner is known for his work as a Green Lantern, his creative flair, and his sarcastic attitude.
Oh, and his bowl cut hairstyle.
While the character hasn’t always had a bowl cut in the comics, it’s by far his most iconic look. It’s the hairstyle he donned for the critically acclaimed Justice League International comic series and Steve Englehart’s Green Lantern run. It’s almost as much of an accessory as his Green Lantern ring.
However, the character almost didn’t have the haircut in James Gunn’s Superman. Nathan Fillion, who plays Guy Gardner in the upcoming superhero film and the HBO Max series Lanterns, fought for the bowl cut.
“There was some talk about different hairstyles,” Fillion says during an interview with DC Studios Showcase Official Podcast. “There was some talk about some different types of things we were going to do. I was Team Bowl Cut the whole way. It’s canon. It’s set. I said, ‘If we don’t do a bowl cut, we’re going to hear about it.’”
Fillion wore a wig for the film. He would’ve cut his hair into a bowl cut, but it would’ve interfered with his role on ABC’s The Rookie.
“I have another job, where the boss was kind enough to let me out for other projects. But I think he would draw the line at a bowl cut police officer.”
Superman flies into theaters on July 11. Green Lantern will be by his side, bowl cut and all.
