Edi Gathegi hopes that Mister Terrific is the superhero role he’s remembered for and not…well…that other thing.

For those who aren’t familiar, Gathegi portrayed Darwin in the 2011 film X-Men: First Class. There was nothing wrong with the way Gathegi played the mutant; the problem was the script. Darwin is a mutant who has reactive evolution. In other words, his body adapts to any situation he’s placed in, making it virtually impossible to kill him.

During a confrontation with Sebastian Shaw, Darwin is struck by the villain and explodes. Many fans, and even Gathegi himself, argued that this shouldn’t be possible due to Darwin’s powers.

As Gathegi prepares for his cinematic debut as Mister Terrific, he hopes he can finally leave Darwin in the past. “Oh, we don’t talk about that. It’s too juicy,” Gathegi says during an interview with the DC Studios Showcase Official Podcast. Mister Terrific is a hero known for his supertech, stylish jacket, and genius intellect. For Gathergi, he represents redemption.

“I’m so happy that I get a redemption arc in the new DC Universe. I’m excited to inspire a whole new generation of Black kids with this new superhero. Mr. Terrific is so fantastic of a character and there’s so much potential.”

Superman hits theaters on July 11.
