DC Studios boss reveals the company's secret mission: Win back audiences who lost faith in DC

Movies like Supergirl and Clayface are here to rebuild trust with fans who feel the previous DC films didn't handle their characters well, as per co-CEO Peter Safran

While Supergirl hasn’t exactly soared at the box office, it still represents something important to DC Studios. As the direct follow-up to 2025’s Superman, it is a sign that DC is trying to win back fans who feel their iconic characters haven’t been given the big-screen treatment they deserve. DC Studios co-chairman and co-CEO alongside director James Gunn, Peter Safran, says the company is aiming to rebuild the trust of its fans.

During the London premiere Supergirl, Peter Safran spoke about the image that DC films have had over the years. Specifically, how they’ve been uneven at best, with key characters like The Flash, Wonder Woman, and Aquaman all having films that were critical and commercial failures. “I want to rebuild the trust of the audience, which I think DC had lost over the years,” Safran explained. “We have a big responsibility on our shoulders, but we’re thrilled with how it’s going so far.”

That Peter Safran is so open about the need to rebuild trust with fans after the end of the DCEU is interesting. Supergirl is their latest attempt at winning that trust back, with Clayface coming in October 2026 and a Superman sequel titled Man of Tomorrow coming out in July 2027. Meanwhile, Lanterns, the Green Lantern TV series set in the DCU, is scheduled for an August 2026 release date.

Superman was met with stellar reviews and performed well at the box office, though Supergirl looks like it might struggle to recoup its budget in the cinema. Does this mean DC Studios has failed in its mission to win back fans who were burned by previous DC films? No, but it does mean the job certainly isn’t finished yet.

Supergirl is in theaters now.
