Michael Rooker hits the mark in more ways than one. The actor, who played Savant in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, is proud of his ability to accurately aim a ball at any target. This came in handy when Warner Bros. began filming Gunn’s superhero film and even helped give the CGI artists a lighter workload.
“[James Gunn] wrote Savant basically based on me,” Michael Rooker says during a spotlight panel at C2E2 2022. “My abilities to hit things and bounce. You know, the bouncing of the ball and Savant. I could bounce a ball without looking. It’s a real ball and I’m bouncing it without looking. So, I could do that. I could do things without looking. I can throw knives and stuff like that and hit targets without looking. I was doing it that way long time ago, and I discovered that I can hit things. I can just hit targets.”
“[Gunn] wrote the role, and he wrote in that scene where I’m bouncing the ball. And they were like, ‘Oh?’ They didn’t realize that I could bounce the ball without looking and keep bouncing it throughout the scene. So, they’re like, ‘Oh, we could do this all in one. We don’t have to CGI the ball. Yay! Oh wow, that’s awesome.’ So, that’s what I did. I just do that for the fun of it.”
