When DC announced that they were rebooting Superman (again) and their faltering DC movie universe, the title being floated around was Superman: Legacy. And it was a pretty cool title – it set itself apart from previous Superman movies and gave an idea of the weight that the character carries with him. However, James Gunn was the one who eventually scrapped the title, even though he was the one who came up with it in the first place.

During an interview with Rolling Stone, James Gunn admitted that he was the one who initially pitched the title of Superman: Legacy, but it never sat right with him. During an early meeting with his production crew, he mentioned that the title had become a sticking point for him. “One of the things I brought up was, it was called Superman: Legacy. First of all, I’m sick of the superhero title, colon, other-name thing,” he explained. Incidentally, we wonder if that is why Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is now simply called Supergirl.

“And also, it seemed to be looking back when we’re looking forward, even though it does have to do with legacy in the movie itself. And everybody was like, ‘Oh, yeah, no, change it.’”

The subtitle was dropped and the first film from the newly formed DC Studios was simply titled Superman instead. Which, as Gunn said, is appropriate for a movie that is, ideally, looking forward to the future of the DCU and their growing stable of movies and TV shows.

Superman (just Superman) is set to kick off the DCU on July 11, 2025.
