James Gunn picked one movie to show DC Studios' Superman cast before they began filming to inspire them, and it wasn't a Superman movie: it was the Christopher Reeve documentary

It’s been 20 years since Christopher Reeve passed away, but his influence can still be felt. His life as an actor and as a humanitarian continues to inspire people.
A new Superman movie will be hitting theaters this summer, and while Reeve won’t be in the movie, his presence was felt on set. Speaking to a crowd at Megacon 2025, Lex Luthor actor Nicholas Hoult spoke about how Christopher Reeve influenced the production of James Gunn’s Superman.
“The Christoper Reeve movies were just fantastic. He’s such a wonderful Superman. And even seeing that documentary about him recently. That was something that before we started filming, James [Gunn] and Peter Safran from DC got us an early screening of that documentary. That was really powerful for all of us to see before we went into creating that movie, and what it means, and seeing Christopher’s story, and his life, and everything that he stood for, and his family. That was really special in terms of just the emotion, and the depth of, and the importance of what we were creating. The history of it.”
Hoult is referring to Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, a documentary on Reeve’s life. In interviews, Gunn has stressed that his upcoming Superman film will be its own thing and won’t be emulating past versions of the character. But that doesn’t mean those versions won’t serve as a source of inspiration.
Seeing the Super/Man documentary reminded Hoult and his castmates of the legacy they’re continuing and what it means to be a hero, both onscreen and off. In that way, Christopher Reeve will always live on.
