Spider-Man: Enter the Spider Verse creators team with Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow writer for... an Archie Comics movie? Never doubt the appeal of Betty, Veronica and the Riverdale Gang
Tom King is writing an Archie Comics movie for Universal Pictures, to be produced by Chris Miller and Phil Lord, and somehow that sentence is entirely true

The combination of writer Tom King (Batman, Mister Miracle, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow) and producers Chris Miller and Phil Lord (Spider-Man: Enter the Spider-Verse, 21 Jump Street, The LEGO Movie) is one that was sure to capture people’s attention no matter the project — but the fact that they’re coming together to bring a classic comic book property to the big screen… and that comic book is Archie… is sure to raise more than a few eyebrows.
Although multiple attempts have been announced throughout the years, this will be the first theatrical adaptation of the long-lived comic book romantic comedy in Archie’s 44 year history. (The character first appeared in Pep Comics #22, back in 1941.) Of course, Archie Andrews, Betty Cooper, Veronica Lodge and the rest of the Riverdale Gang are well known in pop culture through other adaptations, including the CW’s Riverdale, a 1960s animated series, and the pre-Gorillaz pop-band-that-wasn’t, the Archies, whose ‘Sugar Sugar’ remains a staple of retro radio stations worldwide.
In a statement about the new movie, the plot details of which remain under wraps, Lord and Miller said, “We are longtime fans of Archie, Veronica, Betty and the gang in all of their iterations. When we heard Tom King’s take on the classic material, we instantly thought it made sense as an event movie for all audiences — both lifelong fans and a whole new generation. We’re so excited to bring these beloved characters to the big screen.”
The pair will co-produce the movie alongside Emma Watts, Archie Comics CEO Jon Goldwater, and Universal Pictures’ Britt Hennemuth and Christine Sun. Universal will release the project.
If Tom King seems like a surprise choice to write the project, he really shouldn’t; not only has he spoken in the past about his love of the Americana property, he also wrote 2024’s Archie: The Decision, in which Archie and Jughead decide that it’s time, once and for all, for Archie to choose between Betty and Veronica. As might be expected, it really doesn’t go as anyone might have expected.
Expect more news on Archie in the coming months.
