What's the secret first DCU movie in James Gunn's new era? 2023's Blue Beetle
Xolo Maridueña is back as Blue Beetle in DC Studios' Man of Tomorrow film next summer

The Blue Beetle movie is an underappreciated gem of a film that, unfortunately, was dealt a bad hand when it was released in 2023. It was released amid the SAG-AFTRA strikes, so the cast was unable to promote the film during its theatrical run. Additionally, it hit theaters at a time when the public already knew that a full reboot of DC movies and television was on the way, with the formation of DC Studios in 2022, which perhaps didn't do the film any favors.
But now, there's good news for Blue Beetle fans: Jaime Reyes himself, Xolo Maridueña, has joined the cast of DC Studios' Man of Tomorrow film coming out next summer. In the past, James Gunn has expressed a desire to integrate Maridueña's Blue Beetle into the new DC Universe, much like Peacemaker from his 2021 film, The Suicide Squad. Considering that Peacemaker has since joined the DCU proper from his appearance in the 2025 Superman film, it was just a matter of time before Blue Beetle joined this new era for DC characters onscreen.
James Gunn confirmed Maridueña's appearance on the podcast Inside Of You with Michael Rosenbaum, where he referred to Blue Beetle as "the first DCU character for sure," before acknowledging that the 2025 Superman movie is the DCU's first movie.
Maridueña's Blue Beetle is joining a packed cast of characters in Man of Tomorrow. David Corenswet, Nicholas Hoult, and Milly Alcock are back to reprise their roles as Superman, Lex Luthor, and Supergirl, respectively, along with Rachel Brosnahan's Lois Lane, Nathan Fillion's Guy Gardner, Edi Gathegi's Mr. Terrific, Isabela Merced's Hawkgirl, Mikaela Hoover's Cat Grant, and more. They'll be joined by Adria Arjona as Maxima, Matthew Lillard in an undisclosed role, and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart.
