Avengers: Doomsday is already ignoring one of the biggest lessons of the success of James Gunn’s Superman
Movies need a lot of things to succeed. Notably, a script.

We’re all desperate to know what is going to happen in Avengers: Doomsday, which is set to be the next massive crossover film from Marvel Studios in 2026. However, it turns out we’re not the only ones wondering how all these characters are going to come together – even the cast is in the dark. That’s because, unlike what helped rocket James Gunn’s Superman to box office dominance, Marvel still hasn’t finished writing the script even as the film is being shot.
That was one of the details shared by Rebecca Romijn at San Diego Comic Con last month. The actor, who is set to return as Mystique alongside a host of actors from Fox’s X-Men films, was asked if she was done filming Avengers: Doomsday. “[I’m] not quite sure,” she admitted. “The script hasn’t… they haven’t finished writing it. It’s been very, very fun, and we don’t know yet. They keep everything close to the vest themselves in an effort to keep everything under wraps.”
We’re now three months into filming for Avengers: Doomsday, so it is a bit wild to find out that they’re still hammering out the script for what is undoubtedly going to be one of the biggest movies of 2026. It also shows a big contrast between Kevin Feige, who has been the guiding force behind the MCU since its inception, and James Gunn, who has taken on a similar role at DC Studios. Gunn has insisted that no movie will be greenlit by DC Studios until it has a finished, polished script, including sequels like The Batman 2.
Avengers: Doomsday, with a (hopefully) completed script, is set to be released on December 18, 2026.
