Even before Spider-Man: Brand New Day hits cinemas, fans are looking to December 2026 when Avengers: Doomsday hits cinemas. With a cast list that spans multiple universes of Marvel movies and sees Robert Downey Jr. return to the MCU as the villainous Doctor Doom, it is the next big crossover movie for Marvel Studios. And, like most pieces of cinema worth watching, there is more to it than just punching the world’s problems away. The Russo Brothers are calling it their most “emotionally complex” of their Avengers movies.
During a recent interview, both Robert Downey Jr. and the Russo Brothers gave a little background about Avengers: Doomsday and the message it is trying to get across. RDJ says that superhero movies have always been about getting people to engage with each other in a more constructive way. “I’m so glad you brought this up, because what these films always sought to do is divide, create a dialogue, and contain one’s capacity to do that in a place that – because it’s not the real world – you actually get to practice being open to differences in opinion.”
The Iron Man-turned-Doctor Doom star also opined about how there has always been more depth to comic book movies than people give them credit for. “I think Doomsday, more than any [film] so far… just because I’ve now realized our tendency to be telling the story of the world while hiding behind the fact that, ‘No, we’re just telling superhero movies that you can enjoy!’”
Joe Russo, one half of the directing team behind Avengers: Doomsday, compared the upcoming movie to their previous Avengers titles. “There are a lot of surprises in this, and I think [Doomsday is] the most emotionally complex of them all. And in a lot of ways, the most mature of all of them.”
Avengers: Doomsday is out on December 18, 2026.
