What happens when the director of Marvel Studios’ Black Panther and the co-writer of DC’s upcoming The Batman Part II get together for a new project, based on a comic book from indie publisher Boom! Studios? The answer is A Vicious Circle, a new movie coming from Proximity Media and Universal Pictures.
The new movie, announced by the Hollywood Reporter, will adapt writer Mattson Tomlin’s Boom! Studios comic book series of the same name — co-created with artist Lee Bermejo — with Tomlin, who’s also working on Netflix’s upcoming Terminator Zero series, writing the script. Ryan Coogler, who directed both Black Panther and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever for Marvel Studios, is attached to direct as well as produce through his Proximity Media banner.
A Vicious Circle, which launched from Boom! in December 2022, is a time travel story about hit men hunting each other through history. The publisher’s description runs, “Shawn Thacker is a trained assassin from the future who seeks revenge on the only other man with his affliction—each life they take forces them both to involuntarily travel between vastly different past and future eras. Spanning from 22nd century Tokyo to 1950s New Orleans to the Cretaceous Era and beyond, the two mortal rivals are locked in a battle of wills that spans millions of years, all to alter the course of history.”
Alongside Coogler, producers on the project will include Proximity’s Sev Ohanian and Zinzi Coogler along with Boom!’s Stephen Christy, and Mette Norkjaer. Ryan Jones will work on the project for Universal.
