Dakota Johnson's voiceover sounds as bored as the viewer is in the new Madame Web trailer

Sony's latest Spider-Man spin-off is here, and its star doesn't sound thrilled at the prospect

The first trailer for Sony’s latest Spider-Man spin-off has been released — no, not the delayed Kraven the Hunter, but Madame Web, which features Dakota Johnson bringing something new to the superhero sphere: an audible feeling of ennui in her debut appearance.

To be fair, there’s lots about the Madame Web trailer that feels unsteady, not least of which being just how filled with exposition it is, carefully selecting dialogue that introduces and explains the major players so that viewers are left with no doubt as to exactly what’s going on and how the rest of the movie is going to play out. Said players include Sydney Sweeney as Julia Carpenter, and Tahar Rahim as Ezekiel Sims, which suggests that there’s going to be some spooky, cosmic Spider-nonsense happening in the film.

Of course, the trailer is also notable for the number of Spider-Women appearing in it; beyond Madame Web (Johnson), and Carpenter (Sweeney), we also get to see Isabela Merced as Araña and Celeste O’Connor as Mattie Franklin, suggesting that the movie takes place in a multiversal reality where every Spider-Woman that isn’t Silk or Spider-Gwen has been unceremoniously dumped. But at least they have Johnson’s surprisingly downbeat, explanatory eponymous hero to guide them to… new heights…? I don’t know, the way she sounds suggests she might be comfortable taking them to the closest 7-11 and seeing how everybody feels after that.

Watch (and listen) for yourself:

Is it a creative choice on behalf of the filmmakers, or is Johnson just really over doing voiceovers? We'll be able to tell in a few months, I guess.

Directed and co-written by Jessica Jones and The Defenders veteran S.J. Clarkson, Madame Web is officially “coming soon,” according to Sony.
