The journey to the end begins

While it may be a paltry blink-of-an-eye to the Greek gods, 98 days without a new episode of Rachel Smythe's Lore Olympus is the longest wait readers have experienced since the smash-hit Webtoon series launched in 2018. The hiatus will come to an end on November 12, 2023, as Lore Olympus returns for the beginning of the end, and a build towards a series conclusion in 2024.

Smythe's modern reimagining of Greek mythology focuses on The Taking of Persephone, through the lens of the unlikely romance between Hades and Persephone. The sweet romance, complexity of the fickle gods, depths of mythological reference points, and anachronistic sense of humor elevated the long-running series into one of Webtoon's most celebrated works, with over 1.3 billion views and 6.4 million subscribers per Webtoon's published metrics. Lore Olympus has also won back-to-back Harvey and Eisner awards for digital book of the year and best webcomic, respectively, as well as successfully making the leap from infinite-scroll to print.

In July 2023, Lore Olympus episode 250 (part of season three) ended on a massive cliffhanger, with Hades' attempted sleep dive going horribly wrong, and Kronos (once again) possessing the lord of the underworld and lashing out at Persephone. Fans will be relieved to know answers are coming soon, although given the adoration of this run, the news of its eventual finale in 2024 comes as bittersweet.

We don't yet know the precise timing, or the exact number of episodes that remain. Season three currently sits at 43 released episodes, while season one ran from episodes 1 to 115, and season two ran from episodes 116 to 206. Either way, there are still a lot of threads to tie together between the machinations of Hera, Demeter, Zeus and the multi-faceted Pantheon Smythe has breathed life into. Hopefully Persephone and Hades can break their ties to expected myth and make it through to the end.
