"They land the plane," David Harbour describes the Stranger Things finale, which he calls its "best episode"

Just because you love a show doesn't mean you're not worried about how it will end. You've spent years with this story, haven't you? you want to make sure it gets the wrapup it deserves. Well, if you're a fan of Stranger Things, you can bet that you're going to get something incredible. Don't just take our word for it - listen to Sheriff Jim Hopper himself, David Harbour.
Harbour was at New York Comic Con 2024, speaking as a panelist on the Josh Horowitz-hosted Happy Sad Confused panel that took place Thursday night, October 17. Harbor was the first guest to appear on stage and, naturally, the first question he was asked was about Stranger Things. Particularly, host Horowitz wanted to hear an update on how filming of season 5 was going. And Harbour was only happy to share.
"It's the last season," Harbour said, "It's been shooting for what, 10 months now? And we have another couple more to go. We're block shooting, which means we go back and forth shooting a lot of different stuff, but I can say this: we read through the final episode of season 5. Look, I'm very close to the show, so I have very strong opinions and they may not match yours if you're a fan. I see the nuts and bolts, so I'm sometimes very mad at what I think is like a bad episode. Or a bad season. I can be very critical of this show."
If you've never been to the Main stage of the Javits Center, you might not be aware of how loud the room can get. But in this moment, the audience didn't make a peep, eager to hear what Harbour was going to say.
"But that episode, episode eight..." Harbour said quite actorly, pausing for effect "They land the plane."
Which returned the Main Stage to the noise level it's used to.
"It is the best episode we've ever done," Harbour said as the applause was dying down. 'And I'll tell you [...] the end of this episode, when we were just reading it, about halfway through people started crying, and then the last 20 minutes it was just uncontrollable crying waves from different people."
If you can already picture yourself matching those tears as a fan, just imagine being a part of the cast. Actually, you don't have to imagine, as Harbour was pleased to share perspective from the cast.
"Part of that," he said, "is that these kids, it was their childhood, you know? They started the show when they were 11 or 12, and here we are reading and it's 9, 10 years later and we examine that idea. And it's so well done and it's so beautiful. I was totally prepared to not come out here and say that. But it's such a great episode and it's such a great season. You guys will love it."
We're sure we will, David. And we sure as hell are gonna miss you when it's over.
Stranger Things is streaming now on Netflix.
