DC Studios co-president James Gunn has heard fans compare Creature Commandos to Guardians of the Galaxy, and has the perfect response

“This is kind of like Guardians of the Galaxy with the sentimentality stripped back,” James Gunn says.

This December, a new era for DC begins with Creature Commandos. The upcoming animated series is the first official project set in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe. The cartoon, written and voice-directed by Gunn, will focus on a group of misunderstood monsters and misfits.

I know what you’re thinking…this sounds a lot like Guardians of the Galaxy. Trust me, you’re not the first person to make that comparison.

Speaking to a crowd at New York City Comic Con 2024, James Gunn addressed the criticism. “A lot of people have said to me, ‘This is Guardians of the Galaxy. It’s about a team of misfits coming together.’ Well, there is some truth to that, but the truth is, at the end of the day with the Guardians of the Galaxy, you know that those characters are all good people, animals, and trees. This isn’t necessarily the case,” Gunn said.

“This is kind of like Guardians of the Galaxy with the sentimentality stripped back, because the characters aren’t all perfect, and the stories aren’t perfect, and characters die, and it isn’t always for a purpose, like when Yondu dies at the end of Guardians 2. Sometimes it’s just a tragic circumstance. It’s a darker story than that in a lot of ways, but hopefully equally invigorating.”

Creature Commandos premieres on Max on December 5, 2024.
