Dune: Prophecy cast and creators share multiple timelines, complicated morality, and more in the upcoming HBO Original series

Are the Harkonnens really evil? Get the lowdown on Dune lore (and a reveal!) in this interview from NYCC 2024

Given the long-term success of Dune as a literary property, and the recent success of Denis Villeneuve’s cinematic adaptations of the first Frank Herbert novel, you could be forgiven for thinking that the people behind HBO’s upcoming series Dune: Legacy are very aware of the pressure on them. As it turns out, you’d be right.

“It’s terrifying, but it’s also exhilarating,” showrunner and co-executive producer Alison Schapker told Popverse’s Ashely Victoria Robinson during a sit-down interview at New York Comic Con 2024. Her fellow EP Jordan Goldberg, meanwhile, talked about his excitement surrounding “the opportunity to kind of tell a story that has yet to be touched on in the Dune lore.” (For those who don’t know, Dune: Prophecy is a loose adaptation and extrapolation of the novel Sisterhood of Dune, by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, and a prequel to the mythology that fans have seen in the recent movies.)

“I knew I was on to something extraordinary when the man who fixed my TV asked what I was doing next. I said I was playing Tula Harkonnen, and he knelt down at my feet. I thought, I could get used to this,” joked Olivia Williams. Emily Watson, who’s playing Mother Superior Valya Harkonnen, added that what excites her about the show is that it offers “just a really, really, meaty, juicy, kind of complex, messed up bunch of characters to get out teeth into.”

There’s a lot more in the full interview, including whether or not he Harkonnens are really evil or just misunderstood, and you can see it all below — and there’s more Dune: Prophecy coming up on Popverse very soon, so keep your eyes peeled for that, too.
