Spawn creator Todd McFarlane reveals why he wasn't nervous to leave Marvel and found Image Comics
Who knew that comic store owners had such an impact on the foundation of Image Comics?

What’s the best way for a comic book superstar to get a room full of comic book store owners on their side? If you’re Image Comics president and Spawn creator Todd McFarlane at New York Comic Con 2024, the answer was easy: tell them that retailers and comic creators are exactly the same.
“People have asked me dozens and dozens of times, ‘Hey, Todd, was it hard to go and start Image Comics and go out on your on your own?’ The answer is, no. You know why? Because I was just doing what many of you in this room have been doing for decades,” McFarlane explained during an appearance at NYCC 2024’s Retailer Day. “You were doing it before I was! You bet on yourself. You took enough confidence in what you were doing, you had a passion for what you were doing, and you turned it into a business, right? You guys are not really dramatically different than what I do every day and when it works.”
McFarlane continued to talk about the ways in which he thinks that comic creators and comic retailers are, essentially, the same. “We've all had our highs right when it's flying high, and we wish that buzz wouldn't go away. And then, at times, reality comes in, and we have to work hard. All of us! You guys know it, there's ebbs and flows, and the longer you're in any business — I don't care what it is, but in this one, we've all been through it. You gotta have the stomach for both of them. The people who survive the longest, the people I admire, they're the people that I try to pick their brain. I don't have the answer.”
McFarlane pointed out later in the appearance that he’s just turned in the script for Spawn #360. Clearly, even without all the answers, he’s still doing pretty well.
