Monster Hunter Wilds' Rey Dau might be an apex monster, but there's something worse out there
At PAX West 2024, producer Ryozo Tsujimoto clarified that the monster seen in promotional material for the new game isn't Wilds' "flagship monster," which remains under wraps

A creature that caught a lot of people’s attention in early footage from Capcom’s Monster Hunter Wilds is Rey Dau, a wyvern that looks to be quite the threat in early trailers for the 2025 game. During PAX West 2024’s Capcom Presents panel, however, the lead developer behind the game has suggested that perhaps fans shouldn’t get quite so settled in the idea that Rey Dau is the big bad of the entire game.
Talking during a demonstration of gameplay from Monster Hunter Wilds, producer Ryozo Tsujimoto noted Rey Dau’s cameo appearance by saying, via translator, “Even though Rey Dau is a very significant monster in the game that you can see, in the traditional [Monster Hunter] series, we always have a flagship monster. We just wanted to note that Rey Dau is not the flagship monster… There is a different flagship monster, so we hope you guys keep an eye out for further information.”
To some degree, this makes a lot of sense — Monster Hunter Wilds is, after all, some months away from release, so some things need to be kept under wraps for awhile longer. (The game is due for a 2025 release, but when in 2025 remains unknown.) On the other hand, even Tsujimoto described Rey Dau as an “apex monster” during the PAX West panel, raising the question, what could be so much worse as to earn the flagship role?
We’ll have to wait for the answer to that question, it seems… and, perhaps, for the answers to questions we don’t even know to ask yet. Before he left the stage at the panel, Tsujimoto teased, The information for Monster Hunter Wilds has only been released partially.” What more could be waiting to be revealed?
